East Rutherford and Egypt in a zoning dispute
EAST RUTHERFORD -- A dispute over zoning may pit the borough against a foreign government in a court fight, NorthJersey.com reported Monday.
An attorney representing the Egyptian government said he plans to file a complaint in state Superior Court after the borough's zoning board denied an application to convert a two-story building into a residence serving the country's United Nations mission. The application would have required the borough to grant a use variance, which the Egyptian government argued should be allowed because the building would be used in a way consistent with how it had been used previously.

But zoning officials have said the new plan calls for a significant expansion in the number of rooms at the Jersey Street property, which previously belonged to the Franciscan Friars Roman Catholic order.
