HACKENSACK - A former detective-sergeant with the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the death of pedestrian last year.
John Straniero, 49, was driving an unmarked county-owned Crown Victoria to his home in Wayne when he struck Hue Dang, 64, in March 2015, according to police.
Straniero was turning west from Jackson Avenue onto E. Kennedy Street when the accident occurred, according to Hackensack police.
"Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal confirms that he has received notification from the Union County Prosecutor's Office that they have concluded an independent investigation into this matter," spokeswoman Maureen Parenta said in a statement.
"They concur with the findings of the Hackensack Police Department that this was a tragic traffic accident and there is no basis for criminal charges," Parenta said.

At the request of the N.J. Attorney General's Office, Union County investigated the accident to avoid a conflict of interest.
Straniero retired last November after 27 years with the Bergen prosecutor's office.
