Cat stuck for hours in tight space Watch video

RUTHERFORD -- A cat fell about 15 feet and became stuck between two buildings before police and firefighters managed to free the trapped feline in an hours-long rescue early Tuesday.

The cat, named Luna, apparently got out of a kitchen window onto a flat roof, but plunged into a 3.5 inches wide space between a nail salon and liquor store on Park Avenue late Monday, police Chief John Russo said.

Police responded around 10 p.m. to a call from Luna's owner, who lives above the salon, according to the chief. The cat was wedged on her back in the tight space.

Officers tried for about two hours to snare the cat, Russo said. Eventually, they managed to snare Luna's head, but couldn't pull the cat out.

The Rutherford Fire Department arrived and broke through 18 inches of brick wall to reach Luna, Russo said.

"We were then able to grab Luna, cut the snare from her neck and return her to her family at around 2 a.m.," Russo added.

Man had illegal drugs mailed to his home, police say

The cat had scrapes and was taken to a veterinarian to be checked, the chief said. She will need to be quarantined in a 10-day procedure because she bit an officer's finger during the rescue.
