TEANECK -- The Township Council voted Tuesday to sue over Holy Name Medical Center's exemption from local property taxes, The Record reported.

Teaneck joins more than a dozen municipalities around the state that have challenged the nonprofit status of hospitals, following a precedent-setting tax court ruling requiring Morristown Medical Center to pay Morristown $15.5 million in lieu of property taxes.

Michael Maron, CEO of Holy Name, said Teaneck should wait and negotiate with the hospital. City officials said they still planned to meet with the hospital to come to a resolution before moving forward with a suit.

Holy Name's 20-acre property would net about $2 million in taxes.

Gov. Chris Christie said Friday he would push for a two-year "freeze" on similar lawsuits from towns. However, legislative leaders have said they don't agree the moratorium is necessary.
