Albert Ades, 61, pleaded guilty last year to health care fraud.

ENGLEWOOD - A family physician with practices in Creskill and Little Falls has agreed to forfeit his medical license after being sentenced to more than three years in prison for healthcare fraud, authorities said Thursday.

Albert Ades, 61, of Englewood, agreed in a consent order with the state board of medical examiners to give up his license following his March 14 sentencing in U.S. District Court in Newark, according to N.J. Acting Attorney General Robert Lougy.

The doctor pleaded guilty last year to one count of healthcare fraud in connection with a nine-year scheme that involved non-existent office visits to his practices in Cresskill and Little Falls, Lougy said.

Ades bilked Medicaid, Medicare and private insurers for $280,000 in services he did not provide, Lougy said. He was arrested by the FBI in February 2015.

"What makes his crime particularly reprehensible is that he stole from Medicaid, a program designed to assist persons who cannot afford health insurance or health care services," Lougy said in a statement.

According to Lougy:

Ades admitted that from 2005 through June 2014, he submitted claims for face-to-face office visits on dates when he had authorized prescriptions, written refills, or performed other tasks for patients without seeing them in person.

He also admitted altering patients' medical charts by inserting fabricated blood pressure readings, other vitals and clinical notes on patients' charts to make it appear as if they had visited Ades's office on the billed dates.

Ades is prohibited from reapplying for his license.

Ades was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison and ordered to pay restitution to more than a dozen private insurance companies and the federal government.  He is also subject to three years of supervised release, Lougy said.
