Witnesses reported man jumped from crossing
FORT LEE -- Port Authority police on Friday identified the man who jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge as a 35-year-old from New York.
Witnesses saw Samuel Perry plunge from the crossing's south walk around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, police spokesman Joe Pentangelo said.
Perry, of Mamaroneck, was pronounced dead at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, the spokesman said. His body was recovered by the New York City police harbor unit.
The death was the sixth suicide jump from the bridge this year.
A report Friday by the National Center for Health Statistics found the nation's suicide rate reached its highest level in almost three decades.
