TEANECK -- A 24-year-old Hackensack man surrendered to authorities and was charged with leaving the scene of a crash that killed a bicyclist in the township, authorities said Thursday.

Daryl Watkins turned himself in to police late Wednesday after reading news coverage of the death of Juan Vasquez, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said in a statement.

Watkins was charged with one count of leaving the scene of a fatal accident and released on $25,000 bail, with a 10-percent option, according to authorities.

Molinelli said Watkins showed up at the police station only hours after investigators issued a public plea for tips in the case.

Vasquez, 50, of Englewood, was riding his bike eastbound on East Englewood Avenue when he hit the vehicle that was making a left turn to Nelden Road shortly before 11 p.m. Tuesday, the prosecutor's office said. The vehicle continued south on Nelden Road.

"The vehicle was believed to have sustained passenger-side damage and had lost a door handle," the prosecutor's statement said. "This information was disseminated to the public and press."

Vasquez was rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he later died.

Molinelli said township police and the Bergen County Sheriff's Department assisted in the investigation.
