Port Authority police prevented a man from jumping off the George Washington Bridge on Saturday.

FORT LEE --Port Authority police thwarted a man from jumping to his death off the George Washington Bridge Saturday, according to a statement from authorities.

At around 12:15 p.m., Port Authority police officers Vincent Zappulla, Ed Berdeccia and Mark Kopcynski received a report of a man "sitting on the railing of the south walk, mid-span, looking out over the water," the statement said.

Authorities responded to the scene and saw a 32-year-old man "on the river side of the railing." Several officers then "converged on the man."

The man reportedly struggled, the statement said, but the officers were able to wrestle him "to the walkway side of the bridge."

Police were able to get him under control, and officials in the statement said he was being transported to Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus.
