More than 2,000 people are expected to participate in the event.
FORT LEE -- The 29th annual George Washington Bridge challenge will take this Sunday as part of efforts to raise money for the American Cancer Society, and is expected to close lower level lanes until 10 a.m, officials said.
More than 2,000 participants will walk or run in either a 5k or 10k course across the bridge to raise money for the American Cancer Society, the charity group said in a news release.
Port Authority spokesman Neal Buccino said all lanes on the lower level of the GWB would be closed in both directions starting at about 11:59 p.m. on Saturday. The lanes are expected to reopen at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
Upper level lanes will remain open throughout the run/walk, he said.
On-site registration begins at 6:30 a.m., and the race starts at 7:45 a.m. at the Port Authority parking lot at 220 Bruce Reynolds Drive in Fort Lee. Shuttle service will be provided for participants to and from parking facilities as well as New York City residents. Along the route, participants can enjoy snacks, drinks, giveaways and more.
A post-race party will be held at Ross Dock, inside Palisades State Park in Fort Lee, which includes "plenty of kids activities, educational info, live music, performers and fun," the American Cancer Society said in the news release.
