The man allegedly pointed a knife at them.
CARLSTADT -- Police used pepper spray Sunday on a Wallington man who pointed a knife at them, authorities said.
Carlstadt Police officers Jason Colombo and Mark Wong went to Burger King on Paterson Avenue at about 3:15 p.m. after someone reported that there was a man with a knife in the restaurant, Detective Sgt. John Cleary said.
They found Kyle Lerdo, 28, sitting at a booth holding a ratchet handle, Cleary said. Colombo told Lerdo to drop the tool and keep his hands visible.
Lerdo lowered the ratchet handle but then pulled out a dark-colored punch tool, Cleary said. Colombo told Lerdo again to show his hands but he ran toward the exit while holding the tool.
The officers stopped him but he resisted and they used pepper spray, Cleary said. Lerdo pulled a knife out of his pocket and pointed it at the officers as he ran out of the restaurant.
They chased Lerdo and arrested him.
He was found to be carrying 37 decks of heroin, less than 50 grams of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and 9 hypodermic needles, Cleary said.
Lerdo was charged with two counts of aggravated assault against a police officer, resisting arrest, hindering apprehension and drug and weapon offenses. He was sent to Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus on $33,000 bail.
He is due in Carlstadt Municipal Court June 16.
