America's largest newspaper chain could announce the purchase by the end of the week, according to the NY Post.
Gannett is reportedly close to purchasing The Record, New Jersey's second-largest newspaper.
According to the New York Post, the largest newspaper chain in America has been in talks for months to buy North Jersey Media Group, the publisher that owns The Record and close to 50 communities papers across North Jersey.
The Post, citing an unnamed source, reports the deal could be made public by Friday.
Gannett already owns the Asbury Park Press and five other newspapers in the state.
North Jersey Media Group runs the website NorthJersey.com, where articles are published from the Record, the Herald-News and 49 other weekly newspapers throughout Northern New Jersey.
According to comScore, a service that tracks digital audiences, NorthJersey.com has averaged 743,000 unique visitors per month to the site in 2016 across all digital platforms. NJ.com, by comparison, was reported to average 12.6 million unique visitors per month.
The North Jersey Media Group also operates Bergen.com and publishes (201) Magazine.
Currently based in Woodland Park, the paper has been owned by the Borg family since 1930. Stephen A. Borg is listed as the current publisher of The Record and the president of North Jersey Media Group. His father, Malcolm Borg, is the chairman of the company.
A person who answered the phone at The Record said the paper would have no comment.
According to data from the first quarter of this year, The Record's print circulation, excluding affiliated products, is 170,163 on Sundays and averages 135,544 Monday through Friday. The Star-Ledger, the state's largest newspaper, is at 238,900 on Sunday and 161,280 during the week. All numbers include digital replica and non-replica editions.
