PARK RIDGE - One person died and another remained in critical condition on Tuesday after they were hit by a car as they walked along a sidewalk, authorities said.
The accident occurred shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday as Ioannis Kapantais, 69, of Park Ridge and Maochia Hu, 64, of Montvale were struck by a vehicle as they walked together on a sidewalk along Park Avenue near Park Ridge Borough Hall.
The vehicle involved, which remained at the scene, was identified as a 2015 Volvo that was driven by a 61-year-old resident of Park Ridge, according to Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal.
The driver has not been identified.
Service planned for accident victims
Both Kapantais and Hu were taken by ambulance to Hackensack University Medical Center, where Kapantais died.
Hu remains in critical condition at the hospital.
No charges were filed against the driver.
The investigation is ongoing, according to the prosecutor's office.
