Voters had come out in favor of the garage back in November.
RIDGEWOOD -- Village residents voted Tuesday to reject funding for a new parking deck.
Voters rejected a plan to bond $11.5 million to finance a parking deck on Hudson Street by a tally of 2,675 to 1,425.
The vote is a reversal of a November referendum in which voters approved the construction and financing of the garage. However, the vote wasn't legally binding.
Since then, the Village Council solidified a plan to fund the garage, while opposition grew. Residents led a petition drive that gathered more than 1,000 signatures and forced another public referendum.
Mayor Paul Aronsohn had fought for the new parking deck to alleviate the dearth of spaces downtown. The Village commissioned a video pushing residents to vote "yes" in the Tuesday referendum.
A group of village residents sued over the video and a voter guide posted on the Village website, alleging they were an unlawful use of taxpayer funds.
The garage would stand at more than 60 feet tall and hold 325 vehicles.
