LEONIA - A 68-year-old North Bergen man was arrested for the attempted murder of his girlfriend after he choked, pistol-whipped the woman and then crashed his car into a tree, North Bergen police confirmed Friday.

Faustino Madera allegedly argued with his live-in girlfriend over how she made breakfast on Tuesday and dragged her into their bedroom, according to NorthJersey.com.

Madera is accused of choking the woman until she was unconscious. When she awoke, he allegedly was pressing a handgun to her head and then pistol-whipped her, the report said.

About a half hour later, Madera allegedly crashed his car into a tree at Broad and Oakdene avenues in Leonia. He was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons possession. Bail was set at $1 million.
