Trump opposed the tribe's petition to get federal recognition.

Many Ramapoughs still resent Donald Trump for his opposition to the tribe's attempt to get federal recognition 26 years ago, The Record reported.

The Ramapoughs, descendants of the Lenni Lenape who live in Mahwah, Ringwood, West Milford and Hillburn, N.Y., filed for federal recognition as a tribe in 1990.

Trump, in a federal lawsuit and in comments on Don Imus' radio show, questioned whether the Ramapoughs were actually Indian.

The comments were featured in a 2015 documentary about the Ramapoughs. Imus calls them a "bunch of drunken Injuns" who want to open a casino. Trump says, "I have more Indian blood than they do."

Trump also raised fears the Ramapoughs would open casino to compete with Atlantic City.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs denied the Rampoughs' application in 1990 and 1996.

Ramapough Chief Dwaine Perry told told The Record that Trump was to blame.

"Without Donald Trump we would be federally recognized," he said.
