The 51-year-old driver led police in a chase for about 40 minutes, police said.
PATERSON -- A Kearny man who led officers in a chase through Essex, Passaic and Bergen counties was arrested early Thursday morning after he was caught in Paterson, police said.
Nutley police were involved in a motor vehicle pursuit around 2 a.m. that continued into Clifton, Clifton Police Detective Lt. Robert Bracken said in a news release. Nutley police later discontinued their pursuit but Clifton officers spotted the vehicle and tried to stop it.
It's not yet clear what prompted Nutley police to begin the pursuit.
The driver refused to stop and the pursuit continued from River Road in Clifton onto Route 3 west and then on the Garden State Parkway north, Bracken said. The chase continued onto Route 80 and Route 4 and through a numerous Bergen County towns including Ridgewood, he said.
The driver, however, eventually surrendered in Paterson near Rosa Parks Boulevard, he said. The chase lasted about 40 minutes.
Luis Garcia, 51, of Kearny, was arrested and charged with eluding and possession of drug paraphernalia, Bracken said.
