Gary J. Minervini of East Rutherford is charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault and second-degree sexual assault.
EAST RUTHERFORD - A 37-year-old math teacher at Wood-Ridge Junior-Senior High School was arrested Friday after a woman told police he sexually assaulted her for years when she was his student in high school.
Gary J. Minervini of East Rutherford is charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault and second-degree sexual assault, according to Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal.
The woman went to investigators on Wednesday and told them that when she was between ages 13 and 16, her high school teacher, Gary Minervini, engaged in an inappropriate relationship with her and sexually assaulted her, Grewal said in a statement.
A joint investigation between the prosecutor's office and East Rutherford Police Department ensued.
Minervini was arrested in East Rutherford on Friday and taken to the Bergen County Jail on $300,000 full bail, the prosecutor said.
He is scheduled for his first court appearance on Aug. 10 in Central Judicial Processing Court.
Minervini on Friday remained on the Wood-Ridge schools' website, where he is listed as an Algebra teacher.
It was not immediately clear on Friday where Minervini taught when the alleged sex assaults took place. Wood-Ridge district officials were not immediately available to comment on the arrest.
A woman who answered the phone at Minervini's home told a reporter, "I have no responses right now," and hung up.
On his Facebook page, Minervini states he attended Becton Regional High School and studied mathematics at Ramapo College.
