The state's utilities have to contend with pockets of power outages up and down the state

UPDATE: As of 4:45 p.m., JCP&L's outage list had about 2,800 customers in New Jersey without power. More than 1,300 were listed in Monmouth County and 875 are in Hunterdon. PSE&G's outage map listed nearly 1,400 without power.

Residents and visitors to Bay Head, Point Pleasant and Point Pleasant Beach remain without power this afternoon - the largest of dozens of outages caused by a string of storms that moved across the state overnight.

Jersey Central Power & Light reported about 1,400 customers without power around noon in the adjoining Point Pleasant towns, while another 500 are out in Bay Head. The utility estimated most customers would have their electric service restored by 3 p.m., with the remainder back online by 8 p.m.

The company took to Twitter to let people know free bags of ice were available at several locations in Hunterdon County, where there was a larger outage Saturday.

PSE&G reported 80 small pockets of outages statewide, with most of them in Bergen County and surrounding towns. However, they were all problems that affected only a handful of houses each, so only 300 or so customers are actually without power.

Orange and Rockland Utilities also reported a smattering of neighborhood outages in northern Bergen County.

PSE&G officials said electricity usage was expected to near an all-time summer peak for a Sunday previously set in 2005. The isolated outages being reported by PSE&G were primarily from transformer failures as a result of being overloaded, the company said.

The company also received 1,100 calls for air conditioner repairs from customers as of 2 p.m.

Customers of Atlantic City Electric survived the line of overnight thunderstorms without any major problems.
