MAHWAH -- British luxury automaker Jaguar Land Rover says it will build its new North American headquarters on Route 17 in Mahwah.
The township Planning Board recently approved the company's plans to move into the 147,000-square-foot Sharp Plaza that will include a product research, training and development center.
"I am honored to welcome Jaguar Land Rover to their new location on a bigger stage, with a more prominent role within our community," said Mahwah Mayor Bill Laforet.
The company has been housed on MacArthur Boulevard in Mahwah since 1989. The new facility will allow the company to expand staff to 315 employees, up from the current 250.
Construction is slated to begin later this year and a move is scheduled for early 2018, according to the company.
The automaker cited Mahwah's proximity to New York City, open space and easy access to air and rail transportation as its reason to stay in the township.

Sharp announced last month that it was leaving Mahwah for nearby Montvale.
The move to the Sharp building by Jaguar Land Rover was enabled by $28 million in state incentives, according to a press release from the real estate firm involved with the relocation.
"To accommodate our growing business here in North America, we are pleased to move forward with developing a new expanded headquarters in our current home town of Mahwah in the state of New Jersey," said Joe Eberhardt, president and CEO of Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC.
