She criticized Garrett for not supporting an anti-harassment bill.

GLEN ROCK -- The mother of Tyler Clementi said Rep. Scott Garrett had failed to represent people like her son and that he declined to back an anti-harassment bill, NorthJersey.com reported.

Tyler Clementi jumped off the George Washington Bridge in 2010 after a dorm mate at Rutgers University filmed him in an intimate encounter with another man.

Since then, his parents Joe and Jane Clementi have become anti-bullying advocates.

At a protest in Glen Rock on Tuesday, Jane Clementi said she wanted someone in Congress who better represented her family, her advocacy and "people like Tyler."

Garden State Equality organized the protest to call attention to Garrett's record on LGBT issues. Clementi said Garrett has failed to support legislation requiring colleges that receive federal funding to adopt an anti-harassment policy.

Garrett, a Republican, has represented New Jersey's 5th Congressional District, which includes Clementi's town of Ridgewood, since 2003. This year he faces a tough race against Josh Gottheimer, a former White House speechwriter who has raised more money than Garrett.

Garrett faced criticism after reportedly saying he wouldn't support the National Republican Congressional Committee because it backed gay candidates. He later said he was referring to a nominee's stand on same-sex marriage, not sexual orientation.
