MAHWAH -- A developer got approval Monday to build 34 single-family homes and clean lead and arsenic at what is now a country club, the Mahwah Suburban News reported.

In a proposal approved Monday by the township planning board, developer Apple Ridge Mahwah LLC plans to blend contaminated soil with clean soil on the 100-acre property until toxins are diluted to below state-permitted levels.

The developer plans to plant 667 trees to replace 556 that must be removed to clean the soil. Construction on the development, in parts of Mahwah and Upper Saddle River, is expected to begin in 2016. Upper Saddle River has already approved another 44 homes.
