Upper level GWB traffic lanes were closed around 8:30 a.m. as a result of the incident.
UPDATE: 2 eastbound lanes reopened after climber taken into custody
FORT LEE - A report of a man climbing a tower on the New Jersey side of the George Washington Bridge Friday morning led to closure of several lanes of traffic and a walkway, authorities said.
"Reportedly, there is an individual climbing the New Jersey tower, south side," Port Authority Police Spokesman Joe Pentangelo said shortly after the incident began at 8:30 a.m.
About a half hour later, Pentangelo announced the man was in custody.
511nj.org reported that all upper lanes were closed and traffic was diverted to the lower level.
7online.com reported the man was wearing jeans and no shirt.
Around 9 a.m., police began to allow upper level traffic headed into New Jersey. Pentangelo said two eastbound lanes were open after the man was taken into custody and that the lower level remained open.
All lanes reopened shortly before 10 a.m., Pentangelo said.
