The 45,000-square-foot Target in Closter is the first of its kind in the state

CLOSTER -- There are a couple of firsts associated with the Target that opened in northern Bergen County Wednesday morning.

The 45,000-foot store on Vervalen Street in Closter is the first smaller so-called "flexible format" Target to open in New Jersey. It's also the first smaller format store in a suburban setting, according to NorthJersey.com.

The new store has most of Target's traditional offerings including fresh groceries with select ethnic foods, home products, men's, women's and kids' apparel, toys, sporting goods and electronics, according to a statement from the company. The difference from a standard Target is that the selection is smaller.

While the Closter store has a pharmacy, it lacks an automotive department, a gardening or outdoor section, or large furniture offerings.

"Flexible format" stores have sprung up in urban areas that don't have the space for a traditional big box Target. As of July, Target's 1,793 stores averaged 133,700 square feet.
