Richard Genin stopped his car on the George Washington Bridge on Friday and leaped to his death, authorities said

FORT LEE -- A man who jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge on Friday afternoon was a convicted sex offender from New York, according to authorities and court records.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police identified the man who leaped from the bridge as Richard Genin, 65, of New Rochelle, said Joseph Pentangelo, spokesman for the bi-state agency.

Pentangelo said a witness driving behind Genin's 2012 white Honda Civic at 3:20 p.m. reported seeing the driver stop his car in the lane of travel on the lower level of the bridge, get out and jump over the railing.

A Westchester County Police Harbor Unit monitoring a whale in the Hudson River pulled Genin out of the water and performed CPR to try to revive him, Pentangelo said. He was transported to Englewood Marina and taken to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 4:20 p.m. Friday, Pentangelo said.

Court records show Genin was charged by federal authorities in 2008 with being in possession of child pornography. He was convicted in 2011 and was sentenced to 10 years of probation, according to the New York Division of Criminal Justice Services.
