Wyckoff Chief Benjamin Fox, who has been suspended, will call it a career on Dec. 1
WYCKOFF -- The Wyckoff police chief whose emails condoning racial profiling got him suspended has reached an agreement to retire, according to a report.
Benjamin Fox will retire Dec. 1, NorthJersey.com reported. His salary is $151,000, according to state pension records.
He was suspended without pay on Aug. 5, months after temporarily agreeing to step down when an email to officers came to light.
The conditions of his retirement aren't known, the report said.
"Profiling, racial or otherwise, has its place in law enforcement when used correctly and applied fairly," states Fox's December 2014 email, which was released by the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey.
"Black gang members from Teaneck commit burglaries in Wyckoff," the email goes on to read. "That's why we check out suspicious black people in white neighborhoods."
The department has been under the supervision of the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office because the email violates the Attorney General's ban on racial profiling.
The prosecutor's office noted, though, that Wyckoff cops haven't engaged in "substantiated instances of racial profiling."
