JERSEY CITY -- A Fairview man has been charged in a Saturday hit-and-run in North Bergen that left a man in critical condition with skull fractures.

Luis F. Alvarado-Camey, 22, of Hamilton Avenue, is charged with leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in serious bodily injury to the man who has not yet been identified due to the extent of his injuries, the criminal complaint states.

A witness approached Alvarado-Camey after the impact, but he slammed the pickup truck he was driving into reverse and fled the scene, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Kevin Murray said when Alvarado-Camey appeared in court today.

The witness photographed the truck's license plate and that led police to the vehicle, which had heavy front end damage. Alvarado-Camey was arrested the next day. The witness identified Alvarado-Camey, who made a spontaneous statement admitting he hit the victim, Murray said.

The victim remains at Palisades Medical Center, he has bleeding on the brain and is in critical condition, the prosecutor added.

Alvarado-Camey's bail was set at $40,000 cash or bond when he made his first court appearance on the charges this afternoon in Central Judicial Processing court in Jersey City via video link from Hudson County jail in Kearny.
