EAST RUTHERFORD -- A 24-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly attempting to murder a woman who was visiting an acquaintance in the apartment building where he lives.
Francis Tattoli, of East Rutherford, was also arrested on charges of possessing a weapon, authorities announced Monday.
He allegedly attacked a 25-year-old on Saturday while she was visiting an acquaintance in a different apartment in the multi-unit dwelling where he lived.
Authorities said Tattoli attacked the woman, who lives in Kearny, with a knife, after she briefly left the apartment building at about 9:00 p.m. and returned.
The woman was found unresponsive in the doorway of Tattoli's first-floor apartment. She was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center where she is in critical condition, authorities said.
Tattoli fled his apartment, but was apprehended by East Rutherford Police "a short distance" from the apartment, according to authorities.
Police did not disclose a motive for the alleged stabbing. They also did not say whether Tattoli knew the woman.
Bail was set at $2 million with no 10 percent option. Tattoli appeared before the judge on Monday and entered a not guilty plea.
