A neighbor of the 71-year-old on Sunset Place called Bergenfield Police at about 3:06 p.m. to report the break-in, police said in a statement.
The man was sent to the hospital for treatment. He told police he was walking up the stairs to his bedroom when a tall, thin man, wearing a gray sweater and a black winter cap appeared heading down the steps.

Police searched the area but failed to find the man. A Bergen County Sheriff's Department K-9 unit assisted the search.
