Lt. Scott Mura was charged with conducting an unauthorized investigation.

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS -- The borough has cleared a police lieutenant of administrative charges after he was accused of conducting an unauthorized investigation into the dismissal of traffic tickets, NorthJersey.com reported.

Lt. Scott Mura was also accused of running an unauthorized background check on his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend.

Mura claimed Chief Michael Cioffi illegally voided parking tickets issued to the donors of former mayor Joseph Parisi. He filed a lawsuit in December 2015 that said the charges against him were retaliatory.

The borough council voted 3-2 on Dec. 14 to clear Mura of the charges.

Mura could have faced a 10-day suspension and a demotion. He's been on an extended medical leave since April.

The council placed Cioffi on administrative leave in April under a cloud of complaints from officers, an investigation into overtime paid to officers, a whistleblower report and an investigation into the alleged ticket-fixing. Cioffi earns $223,616 a year to head the 26-member department, making him among the highest-paid chiefs in the state.
