A fire broke out at 500 Gorge Road, a high rise building for seniors, veterans and disabled persons, before 9 a.m., said Stewart DeVito, coordinator for the Office of Emergency Management at Cliffside Park.
CLIFFSIDE PARK -- Three people were hospitalized after a fire broke out Tuesday morning in a apartment in a public housing complex in Cliffside Park, authorities said.
The fire broke out on the 14th floor before 9 a.m. at 500 Gorge Road, a public housing complex that houses the disabled, veterans and seniors.
The 13th and 14th floors had "extensive smoke and water damage," and those who occupy the 14th floor will likely be temporarily displaced, said Stewart DeVito, coordinator for the Office of Emergency Management at Cliffside Park.
The fire was extinguished around 11 a.m. and the cause is being investigated.
The extent of the injuries of those taken to the hospital was not immediately known, DeVito said.
Steven Puibello, who has lived on the second floor of the 19-floor building since 2011, said building staff told residents to stay in their apartments and out of the elevator.
He said the staff kept everyone calm throughout.
