The 12-pound cannonball was found in Bergen County Watch video
JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST -- A ground-shaking boom was heard across the area Tuesday as an explosives team safety detonated a live Civil War-era cannonball.
A 12-pound cannonball, mortar and small hand grenades that had been found in Bergen County were taken to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Tuesday afternoon, where they were blown up by members of the base's 87th Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, spokeswoman Senior Airman Lauren Russell said.
The explosives had been recovered by the Bergen County Sheriff's Office bomb squad, but a sheriff's spokesman said he did not know exactly where or when they were found.
People living near the base who are used to hearing noises said the explosion from the cannonball was louder than usual.
