FAIR LAWN -- A bag that sparked a bomb scare Monday turned out to be filled with sand, police said.
A customer of Plaza Nails on Plaza Road reported the lime green bag sitting on the sidewalk in front of neighboring Istanbul Cafe and Grill as a suspicious package at 10:09 a.m., Fair Lawn Police Sgt. Brian Metzler said.
Police evacuated the Radburn Plaza building, where Plaza Nails is located, and closed Plaza Road between Fair Lawn and Howard avenues, as well as High Street between Plaza and Abbott roads.
The Bergen County Sheriff's Department Bomb Squad x-rayed the bag and determined it was filled with sand, Metzler said. Police learned the sand was used to keep the sidewalk sign for the Istanbul Cafe and Grill from blowing away.
