A veteran police officer was charged with pilfering about $800 worth of supplies from the borough's volunteer ambulance squad, authorities said Wednesday.

Donald MacIsaac, of Ringwood, surrendered Tuesday and was charged with a single count of third degree theft, police Chief Glen Cauwels said in a statement. The 27-year department veteran was released and suspended without pay.
"The investigation revealed Officer MacIsaac removed supplies from the Fair Lawn Volunteer Ambulance Corps without permission on fifteen different occasions," Cauwels said.
The stolen goods included blankets, pillowcases, gloves, sanitary wipes, and have a total value of about $821, police said.

Authorities charged MacIsaac after a two-month investigation involving the borough police department's Internal Affairs Unit and the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, according to the chief.
"The Fair Lawn Police Department is full of great police officers, what occurred in this case is not a reflection of how our department operates," Cauwels said. "Police misconduct will not be tolerated."
"Our department has implemented an internal affairs policy that provides for a meaningful and objective investigation of citizens' complaints of police misconduct," the chief added. "When officers are found to have engaged in misconduct, this department must correct the behavior."
