FRANKLIN  LAKES - Borough Police Chief Carmine Pezzuti chased an alleged shoplifter out of a Stop & Shop grocery store Sunday and into the store's parking lot where he arrested the man, authorities said.

Pezzuti, who was off-duty, saw the man shoplift a case of Red Bull valued at $150, police Lt. John Bakelaar stated in a news release on Monday.

"The chief pursued this individual into the parking lot and placed him under arrest," Bakelaar said.

Roy Scmitt, 32, of North Haledon, was charged with shoplifting and resisting arrest.

Schmitt was taken to the Bergen County Jail on $5,000 bail.

Pezzuti, 55, has been with the police department for more than 30 years.
