JERSEY CITY -- An Edgewater man has been charged with robbing a man at knife point on Sunday in Hoboken, but officers canvasing the area spotted him and the victim identified him as the robber, officials said.

Bail was set at $200,000 cash or bond for Matthew I. Trontz, 23, when he made his first appearance on the charges of robbery and weapons offense related to a knife in Central Judicial Processing court in Jersey City yesterday.

Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor John Wojtal said the alleged robbery was a stranger to stranger incident, in which Trontz is accused of brandishing a knife and demanding the victim's cellphone and wallet. He said the wallet and a knife were found in a garbage can with the victim's identification.

Officers spotted Trontz in the area and detained him because he fit the description of the suspect, Wojtal said, adding that the victim then identified him.

After the hearing, Trontz was remanded to the Hudson County jail in Kearny.
