TEANECK -- Police found illegal drugs Thursday while responding to a house fire, authorities said.

Teaneck police and firefighters responded to a burning Lindbergh Boulevard home at about 9:05 p.m., Police Chief Robert A. Carney said.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, but the fire damaged the house. While inside, Police Officer Michael Scalise saw marijuana, prescription pills and and wax folds used to package heroin, Carney said.

Police took the two residents of the home, Humberto M. Cabrera and Shamir Cortorreal-Munoz, into custody, and executed a search warrant at the home.

They found four pounds of heroin, worth an estimated $25,000; 16 pounds of marijuana, worth an estimated $40,000; material for packaging heroin, including 17,000 wax folds and 33 stamps to label packaged heroin; $1,839 in cash; and a Volvo SUV with a motorized hidden compartment under the front passenger seat, Carney said.

Cabrera, 23, and Cortorreal-Munoz, 27, were both charged with drug offenses including maintaining or operating a drug production facility and distribution of heroin. Cabrera was also charged with distribution of marijuana.

A judge set bail at $750,000 for both men.

The Teaneck Fire Department is investigating the cause of the blaze.
