ROCHELLE PARK -- A Maywood man shot by police Monday has been charged with weapon possession and two counts of aggravated assault against a police officer.
A criminal complaint said Matthew Chaseman, 46, tried to use a BB gun to threaten Rochelle Park police officers.
Police shot Chaseman near his vehicle parked in the driveway of an office building on Route 17 and West Passaic Street, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said. Chaseman suffered lower leg injuries.
A BB gun with its orange tip painted black was found at the scene, Molinelli said. Chaseman crashed his Toyota sometime before the shooting and was parked in the office building driveway when building security called the police. Several bricks from a flowerbed on the office building lawn were knocked loose.
The shooting took place when police arrived, Molinelli said. Authorities have not said what caused the confrontation.
Chaseman is scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning. The prosecutor's Officer-Involved Shooting team is investigating.
