JERSEY CITY -- The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office has identified the victim of last night's fatal shooting as a Palisades Park resident.
Byungeun Lee, age 61, was shot inside Top Plus, a clothing store he owned on Bergen Avenue, at about 4 p.m. yesterday.
According to a preliminary investigation, Lee suffered from gun shot wound(s) to his upper body in an apparent robbery, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced.
No arrests have been made in connection with the homicide. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit at (201) 915-1345 or by leaving an anonymous tip on the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office official website.
Last night's homicide is the 24th for the city this year, surpassing last year's total of 23. This is the 29th overall for the County, while all of last year's homicides were in Jersey City.
This morning, business owners were shaken up by the homicide during the day in a business area.
The manager at Shine Beauty Supply, who declined to provide her name, said she and the man would have coffee together every once in a while.
"To me it was very scary knowing it was right next to us," the manager said this morning. "For so many years, we have been in Journal Square and there are things that happen further down... but to know that it happened right next to me, it's very scary."
Ward C Councilman, Rich Boggiano said he has been pushing for a heavier police presence in the neighborhood.
"We need cops in Journal Square," said Boggiano, a retired police detective. "Journal Square is the Times Square of Jersey and it's getting to be annoying the lack of police we have."
"It's one thing after the other," he added. "They've got to do something and we have to have a strong response from the top officials from in city saying enough is enough."
City officials did not immediately respond for comment today.
