MAHWAH -- The Township Council introduced an ordinance Thursday that would ban unregulated pipelines, The Record reported.

The Mahwah Planning Board recommended the ban after hearing from dozens of residents who oppose the proposed Pilgrim Pipeline project.

The 178-mile parallel pipelines would run between Linden and Albany, N.Y.

Pilgrim Pipeline Holdings filed a permit application in November to start work in New York. The line would enter New Jersey through Mahwah, according to maps submitted as part of the application.

The company expects to file for a permit application in New Jersey in early 2016, Pilgrim Pipeline spokesman Paul Nathanson told The Record. If Mahwah passes the ordinance, the township would join eight other municipalities in prohibiting pipelines, though it's not clear if the bans would hold up in court.
