GLEN ROCK -- Police Chief Fred Stahman is set to retire early next year, officials said.

Stahman will leave the position Jan. 6 by using accumulated time off before his official retirement March 1, The Record reported.

The chief's salary was $158,366, according to state records. Stahman served as chief since 2009.

Lt. Dan Dour will continue to serve as officer-in-charge of the agency, pending action by the mayor and council, borough officials said in a statement.

"The Mayor and Borough Council are confident in Lieutenant Dour's ability to ensure smooth operations of the police department and continued coverage in the interim," the statement added.

The borough's police force has experienced several controversies in recent years, including the arrest of a detective sergeant for allegedly sending sexually explicit text messages to underage girls.

Bergen County prosecutors charged Detective Sgt. Eric Reamy with sending the messages to girls involved in cases he was handling as the department's juvenile investigator. Authorities in September added new charges accusing Reamy of selling guns that were surrendered to the department.

In another incident, Sgt. Christopher McInerney and Officer Bryan Scott were suspended and later reinstated after officials accused them of deleting two photos from a department computer that reportedly showed McInerney baring his buttocks.

A report by retired judge Alexander Carver found that the "basic state of the GRPD is good to excellent."
