1 killed in Teaneck hit-and-run Christmas evening, cops say

At the scene police found a 59-year-old man had been fatally struck by what witnesses described as a large black SUV appearing shiny and clean.

TEANECK -- A man was killed in a hit-and-run on Christmas evening, police said.

Police responded to reports of a pedestrian struck at Cedar Lane and Garrison Avenue just after 6:45 p.m. Friday, Sgt. George Molina of the Teaneck Police Department said Saturday morning.

At the scene they found a 59-year-old lying in the road who had who had been struck by what witnesses described as a large black SUV.

The man was later identified Saturday afternoon as Steven J. Leitgeb, of Teaneck, by Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli.

Leitgeb suffered serious injuries and was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center where he later died.

The vehicle involved in the incident was seen going eastbound on Cedar Lane and has front passenger-side damage and may have windshield damage, said police.

Police closed Cedar Lane, a busy retail corridor, for several hours Friday as they were on scene investigating. The street has been re-opened, police said.

the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit is also investigating.

Police said detectives were still on scene Saturday morning.
