Wayne Mello, a Jersey City native, has been announced as the new First Assistant Prosecutor for Hudson County.
Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez has tapped a former Bergen County prosecuting attorney as her new first assistant prosecutor.
Wayne Mello, a Jersey City native and Saint Peter's College graduate, has been named the HCPO's new first assistant prosecutor -- the department's highest ranking prosecutor under Suarez.
The selection was announced today, and Mello -- who also attended Rutgers School of Law -- will be sworn in during a private ceremony on Wednesday.
The Jersey City resident was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in 1977 and has worked at both the Morris and Bergen County prosecutor's offices, most recently serving as the Chief Homicide Assistant Prosecutor for Bergen County.
Mello also served as an Infantry First Lieutenant in the Army during the Vietnam War.
"Wayne is a top-notch career prosecutor, who will bring a wealth of experience and insight to our Office," Suarez said in a statement. "He has tried a number of complex and high-profile criminal cases and has a reputation for being a meticulous and passionate advocate. We are excited to have him on board and he is eager to begin his new post."
A public ceremony will be held for Mello at a later date.
