Mary Wall, 64, was found about 3:30 p.m. lying in the snow outside her home at 49 Sunnyside Road.
MAHWAH - Several children found the body of a woman Monday who apparently collapsed and died while shoveling snow two days earlier, according to police.
Mary Wall, 64, was found about 3:30 p.m. lying in the snow with a shovel in her hands outside her home at 49 Sunnyside Road, police said.
She appeared to have suffered a medical emergency while shoveling snow, said Sgt. Michael Blondin.
The children were "were walking home when they observed what appeared to be a jacket sticking up from the snow in the driveway," Blondin said in a statement.
The children knocked on the resident's door to alert her that the item had been left in the snow but there was no answer, Blondin said.
"Upon closer examination of the jacket, they observed it was the victim almost totally covered by the fallen snow," Blondin said.
"They realized she was in the jacket," Blondin said.
Woman afraid to drive in snow found dead in Hackensack parking lot
The woman was holding the shovel and "dressed for the elements," Blondin said.
"She had apparently been there for quite some time," Blondin said.
The children alerted their parents, who called 911.
Wall was positively identified by family members, police said.
"She apparently suffered an unknown medical emergency during the blizzard on Saturday, collapsed and additional snow fell on her," Blondin said in the statement.
"There were no indications of any criminal involvement in the incident and the matter is still under investigation by the Mahwah Police Department being assisted by the Bergen County Medical Examiner's Office," Blondin said.
The death was apparently the fifth in New Jersey related to the winter storm:
- In Hackensack, a 78-year-old Medford, N.Y. woman was discovered dead in her car outside a Burger King. She apparently had decided to ride the storm out in her vehicle rather than drive in the snow.
- In Passaic, a 23-year-old Passaic woman and her 1-year-old son died of carbon monoxide poisoning.
- In East Greenwich Township, Gloucester County, a 62-year-old man died Saturday after his car got stuck in the snow and he attempted to walk home.
