PALISADES PARK -- The Borough Council voted Tuesday to remove a suspended police sergeant from the payroll, two months after resuming payments, The Record reported.

Sgt. Marc Messing went back on the payroll in December because the council never voted on a decision by Police Chief Ben Ramos and Police Director Michael Vietri to suspend his pay last summer.

Messing, the son of Councilwoman Cynthia Pirerra, who abstained from the vote, was accused last year of altering a check made out to the borough for $1,000 and depositing it in his own account. He pleaded not guilty in August.

The borough resumed paying Messing a biweekly check of $4,833.80 in December in addition to $38,670 in back pay.
