CARLSTADT -- Police charged the owner of a Carlstadt furniture company with theft on Jan. 28 after customers complained that he failed to deliver the products for which they had paid.

Lev Stanik, 48, owns the company Ornatti LLC. The company sells home and business furniture to customers on the websites MrFurniture.com, Furniture4Homes.com and Furniture4Homes.net. Stanik also operated under the names Modern Home Concepts, Viva Trade, Best Items Buy and Laflet Sabmax.

Four customers have complained about Stanik, a Rahway resident, since April, Carlstadt Detective Sgt. John Cleary said. On April 22, a customer gave Stanik a down payment of $2,000 for six chairs.

Stanik never delivered the chairs after several months and refused to communicate with the customer, Cleary said. Carlstadt investigators eventually confirmed that Stanik had deposited the customer's $2,000 check.

Another group of customers showed up to the address of Ornatti LLC on 111 Commerce Rd. to confront Stanik, Cleary said. They paid for furniture on July 21, but had not received it as of Sept. 13.

They contacted Ornatti several times and got different reasons why the furniture hadn't been delivered, Cleary said. Stanik appeared at the Commerce Road address to talk to the customers after several attempts to reach him.

In December, the customers finally got a shipment from Stanik, but it was the wrong color--white instead of tan--and it was missing a piece, Cleary said. They haven't been able to reach Stanik since.

Police were called to 111 Commerce Rd. on Oct. 1, when another customer had a dispute with Stanik, Cleary said. The customer bought $22,000 in furniture, but it was lower quality than what he ordered.

He tried reaching Stanik for months without success until he showed up in person at his office, Cleary said.

Another customer filed a complaint Dec. 4. He ordered furniture from Modern Home Concepts and paid a $1,540 deposit, Cleary said.

The furniture was supposed to come Oct. 21, but never arrived, Cleary said. The customer filed a police report after failing to reach the company several times by phone.

On Dec. 13, the furniture arrived, but it was the wrong color and missing a piece, Cleary said. The customer still hasn't been able to reach Stanik.

Police issued a criminal complaint to Stanik for theft of moveable property. He's due in Carlstadt Municipal Court Feb. 18.

The state Division of Consumer Affairs sued Stanik in 2012 after receiving complaints that he failed to deliver merchandise. He and a business partner settled the lawsuit for $300,000.

The Bergen County Office of Consumer Affairs is investigating other complaints against Stanik.

Cleary asked anyone with information or complaints about Stanik to contact him at (201) 531-7187 or jcleary@carlstadtpolice.org or the Bergen County Office of Consumer Affairs at (201) 336-6400.
