DUMONT -- A borough man will be charged with driving while intoxicated after his car was struck by a freight train Sunday, police said.
Dumont Police received several reports of a car on the train tracks near Niagara Street just after midnight, Lt. Vincent Tamburro said.
Officers heard a train coming when they arrived, Tamburro said. A northbound CSX freight train collided with the passenger's side corner of the vehicle, sending it spinning.
The vehicle came to rest on its side against a tree. Police pulled the driver, Nicholas McKay, 45, from the vehicle, which was leaking fuel, Tamburro said.
McKay was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for surgery, Tamburro said. Aside from DWI, he will be charged with driving with a suspended license, reckless driving and having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.
