Police spotted the 20-year-old walking along the GWB without a coat in 32-degree weather.
FORT LEE - Port Authority police talked a 20-year-old suicidal woman out of jumping from the George Washington Bridge Thursday, authorities said.
"Officers on patrol on the GWB spotted her walking on the south walkway without a coat. The temperature was around 32 degrees," Joseph Pentangelo, a spokesman for the Port Authority Police Department, said Friday.
After speaking with police officers, the woman agreed to go to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center for evaluation, Pentangelo said. "It became clear she was in need of help."
The incident occurred about 10:30 a.m. No one was injured.
Thirty-six people committed suicide by jumping off the GWB in 2014 and 2015.
By 2024, the Port Authority plans to build a fence to stop people from going over the waist-high rails on either side of the bridge.
