FORT LEE -- Law enforcement officers from both sides of the Hudson River recently drilled for emergencies by scaling the cables of the George Washington Bridge at the New Jersey tower.
The bridge walk was organized by the Port Authority police in part to celebrate graduations from the New York City Police Department's eight-month Emergency Services Unit training program, the PAPD said.
Elite ESU units respond to emergencies ranging from barricaded suspects to dangerous rescues that require specialized tactics. At the bridge, the officers are also called on to thwart suicide attempts.

The cable climb helped to familiarize police from nearby departments with the bridge's infrastructure, Port Authority police said.
In addition to Port Authority police, officers from Jersey City, the NYPD and New York City Department of Correction participated in the trek above traffic on the span Monday.
