Cause of death remains unclear

RIDGEWOOD -- Officials on Friday identified the man found dead on the NJ Transit tracks between the Ridgewood and Ho-Ho-Kus train stations.

A commuter train crew discovered Paul T. Schneider, 60, dead on the tracks around 10:30 p.m. Thursday near the Glen Street bridge, according to NJ Transit.

Schneider's last known address was in Ridgewood, but police were told he no longer lived at that residence, transit agency spokeswoman Jennifer Nelson said.

Authorities have not yet determined how Schneider died, but initially said he was apparently struck by an earlier train.

The medical examiner's office would determine the precise cause of death, the spokeswoman added.
