Police release sketch of man, ask for tips from public
TEANECK -- Authorities said Friday they were seeking help from the public to find a man who pulled over a motorist and impersonated a police detective in the township.
The driver was heading north on River Road when a blue four-door car pulled out from Dearborn Street with a blue emergency light on the dashboard around 11 a.m. Saturday, Chief Robert Carney said in a statement.
The female motorist pulled over when she saw the flashing light and the car stopped in front of her, according to the chief. A man driving the blue car identified himself as a detective and told her she was speeding.
"The male subject had his hand resting on a gun that was holstered on his right hip," Carney said. "Suspecting that the male was not a real police officer, the female drove away from the stop."
The man drove away and headed east on Washburn Street, police added. His car was possibly a Ford Taurus.
Authorities described the impersonator as a white man, in his 40s, about 5-foot-9, 170 pounds, with a buzz cut and dark hair, dark eyes and a scar by his left eye.
He was wearing a black Carhartt sweatshirt with a gold zipper, a white undershirt and dark pants, according to police.
